Why do so Many Managers Avoid Giving Praise? By Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman
It seems like giving both negative or corrective feedback, as well as positive/enforcement feedback, is really important. Personally, those are the types of feedback I would like to receive. I sometimes forget to give positive reinforcement when someone does something really great, focusing too much on trying to give feedback that is corrective or aimed to push for improvement. Positive feedback, as seen in the data from the Managers Are Seen as More Effective When They Give Praise chart from Zenger and Folkman, drastically changes effectiveness. I think I have the same problem as the managers in the study. This will be something I work on.
The Trouble with “Amazing”: Giving Praise that Matters by Jennifer Gonzalez
Firstly, the reference to American Idol was perfect and I immediately latched onto it. Jennifer Gonzalez really reached the heart of the problem for me, which is that feedback like “amazing” or “that was great” isn’t specific enough to build from. Building off of feedback is really important, because it allows for improvement as well as taking the time to notice the improvement so it doesn't go back to the way it was before.
