Favorite Place: Granny's House

I can recall picking crab-apples off the trees, along with other leaves and all anything else my cousins and I could find, to brew a “stew” that ended up a mushy mess every time. We put on puppet shows in the dining room: our parents sat on one side while we sat in the other, underneath the table reading off the script my cousin Marlania wrote. In her living room, we watched the Lion King for the first time and I woke everyone up with my gasp as Scar killed Mufasa. These memories are why her home is a place that will always sit on the throne of favorites in my heart.
Recently, it’s been a hard place to enjoy because I lost an aunt who was very special to me. But in the past few months, as my granny has decided to move to the newer neighborhood in Muskogee, I have come to remember all the good things I have always loved about her house. I think having endured the tragedy of a loved one passing was made easier in a place that is so familiar and special to me. It is a place where I will always feel at home, and that is why it is my favorite.

I am sorry to hear about your aunt, Lauren; I've been caring for my dad (he's on hospice), and as most of his friends are in their 80s and 90s, it's a different world with so many losses looming. But also so many memories: it's amazing to sit there listening to those quite old people sharing memories of their own grandparents from 70 or 80 years ago, back when they were little. Those are things you never forget!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that picture of the swing set swinging: beautiful! :-)
